Ian is a specialist emergency physician with a wealth of experience in coordinating emergency health responses to disease outbreaks and disasters.
He was head of the WHO’s Emergency Medical Team (EMT) Initiative in Geneva from 2014-20. He led responses for WHO to Ebola, Diphtheria and Measles outbreaks as well as to earthquakes, cyclones, and conflicts. Prior to this he was director of disaster preparedness and response at the national trauma centre in Darwin, was director of MIMMS Australia and founded Australia’s AUSMAT response teams and led Australia’s response to the Pakistan floods, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and Dengue outbreaks in Solomon Islands.
Currently Ian is the founder and managing director of the health crisis management organisation Respond Global and acts as Coral Expeditions’ Chief Medical Officer.
